Artist's reception at Madoka Restaurant
Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 6:00 p.m.
Madoka Pan Pacific Restaurant presents Flower Portraits: Photographs by Stephen M. Stolee
In celebration of a long awaited Spring, Madoka Restaurant presents an exhibit of Flower Portraits by local artist, Stephen M. Stolee. Featuring colorful impressions of flowers found in perambulations around the Island, the show will hang through June and the restaurant will entertain a public reception for the artist Thursday, May 22 at 6:00 pm.
The welcome harbingers of a return to activity after a season of retreat the promise of new life and growth to come, flowers vividly call up to us all that we find beautiful in our world. They embody figuratively as well as literally the essential impetus for the propagation and continuation of life itself. Their capacity for flamboyant exuberance is magnified by their willing generation from the most ordinary of circumstances: lawns, gardens, flowerboxes. Each one initiates its colorful seduction by its own distinctive means; each displays a discrete personality; each tells a story of its place in the universe.
Photographer, filmmaker and graphic designer Mr. Stolee is a BFA of the University of Washington School of Art, and a resident of Bainbridge Island since 1979.
The prints on exhibit here are made with archival pigment inks on Epson fine art papers that will maintain their colorful integrity for over one hundred years. Please inquire at the restaurant if you wish to purchase these photographs.

The Short List: 3 things our writers love this week
May 11, 2008
Lynn Jacobson, Seattle Times Arts & Life Editor
Swim, paddle or simpler take a ferry to Bainbridge Island to visit this sleek out-of-the - way Pan-Pacific spot. On a recent Saturday night, the half-dozen (mostly seafood) dishes my family sampled were perfectly cooked and exquisitely presented in sauces of basil, ginger, wasabi, lime and other things I can't relate for fear of drooling on my keyboard. Well worth the trek.

Madoka: High-Quality Dining in Winslow September 24, 2007
Bernard Jacobson, Kitsap Sun Dining Out
Usually I'm not a fan of fusion cuisines. Being something of a purist, I prefer, say, "pure" classic Italian (or "pure" modern Italian for that matter), or "pure" classic French, or "pure" high-style Mexican (which unfortunately my wife and I haven't yet managed to find anywhere locally). So, to seduce me, a restaurant that advertises its style of cuisine as "pan-Pacific" has to be pretty good.
Fortunately, Madoka is that, with bells on....

Best Bites of 2006 December 22, 2006
The butter lettuce and green apple salad at Madoka on Bainbridge was simple and sublime. Dressed with pitch-perfect vinaigrette sweetened with verjus and fireweed honey, it arrived as a nest of soft lettuce leaves garnished with tart green apple, caramelized walnuts and chunks of creamy Point Reyes blue cheese...

Chefs at Play: Asian standards are served with a happy twist at Bainbridge Island's Madoka July 12, 2006
Sarah DeWeerdt, Seattle Weekly
On my first visit to Madoka, a sleek new restaurant offering "Pan-Pacific" cuisine on Bainbridge Island, my husband and I snagged a quiet corner booth within sight of the semi-open kitchen. The weekend evening rush hadn't yet begun, and chef Alvin Binuya stood in front of a long horizontal work surface flanked by two assistants. Mostly, the three men stood there silently, knives...

Gourmet Magazine July 1, 2006
Ever since Madoka opened, riding the Bainbridge Island ferry has become a high priority on every Seattle visitor's must-do list. The half-hour crossing, with its panoramic views of the city skyline and bustling harbor, whets the appetite fo the pan-Pacific menu by chef Alvin Binuya (formerly of Ponti Seafood Grill and Axis.) Look for the sake-braised lamb shank, red-curry seafood risotto, and weathervane scallops with parsnip fritters.
